Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Director of Athletics Brian Teter announced that the Islander athletic department will host the 2009 SLC Baseball as well as the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships.
The university will host the SLC Cross Country championships this fall at West Guth Park.
The Islanders have competed in the Southland Conference in men’s tennis as an associate member since 2003, winning three league titles since then. The 2006-07 athletic year marked the first season in which all other sports other than softball have competed for a conference championship.
The men’s and women’s tennis championship will be held April 24-26 at the HEB Tennis Center, the site of the longest running men’s tennis collegiate tournament. “Corpus Christi is a tremendous tennis community and I am thrilled to be bringing the Southland Conference men’s and women’s tournament to the Coastal Bend in 2009,” said Teter. “Our tennis programs have generated a lot of interest over the years, and now with Steve Moore directing both programs, it will be exciting to watch the city of Corpus Christi embrace the Southland Conference Championship event here with the automatic NCAA Tournament bid on the line.”
The Southland Conference Baseball Tournament will be held on May 20-23 at Whataburger Field. For the past two seasons, the venue has been the host of the Whataburger Classic, one of the best collegiate baseball tournaments in the country. “I believe this is a great opportunity for the rest of the Southland Conference to come to Corpus Christi for the right to play for an automatic trip to the NCAA Tournament in one of the top baseball venues in the nation,” Teter said. “I am thankful to the Southland and the Corpus Christi Hooks organization for making it possible for us to host at Whataburger Field and create a great atmosphere that will benefit our university and the entire Corpus Christi community.”
