Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi interim baseball coach Gene Salazar announced the addition of assistant baseball coach Eric Gonzalez to his staff on Wednesday.
“Eric brings a great knowledge of the game of baseball to our program,” said Salazar. “He has experience in all aspects of running a collegiate program on and off the field. He learned the day-to-day operations of running a program as head coach at Texas-Brownsville. On the field, he has worked with all facets – offense, defense and pitching. His primary responsibilities for us will be hitting and the infield defense.
“He is going to be a tremendous asset for this program.”
Gonzalez, who was an All-Southwest Conference player during his career at Texas A&M, brings coaching and experience, has professional and collegiate experience as a player and coach. He served as the head coach at Texas-Brownsville from 1996-2002 as well as head coach at Del Rio for two seasons (2004-05). Gonzalez also spent time as the hitting and infield instructor for the Coastal Bend Aviators. He has been an instructor and director at numerous camps.
As player, Gonzalez played two seasons at Texas A&M University during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. During his career with the Aggies, Gonzalez played in the 1993 College World Series and was a member of a team that was ranked as high as No. 1. He received a GTE Academic Achievement Award both years.
Professionally, the new Islander assistant played for the Corpus Christi Barracudas during their inaugural season in the Texas-Louisiana League winning the 1994 league championship. Gonzalez also played for the Abilene Prairie Dogs, who the 1996 Texas-Louisiana League title, during his time with the team.
